Description
Simpler is often better, and simply put this is one of the most versatile packs ever created. If you prefer going light and moving fast in the woods, mountains and around town, the Tempest 20 is the pack for you. 20L of capacity is perfect for day hikes, urban commutes or a trip to the market. Ventilated and comfortable, the women's specific BioStretch harness and continuous wrap hipbelt combine to create an incredibly stable carry system that hugs your body so you can stay balanced on the trail, ridge or peak. We scratched our heads and updated our AirScape backpanel to use less material and glue while making it more breathable to keep you cool on hot days. When uphills turn technical, our Stow-on-the-Go trekking pole carry system keeps your hands free for upward movement. LidLock helmet carry achieves the same when you stop for a mid-commute coffee. Zippered hipbelts, side stretch mesh pockets, a harness pocket and top-lid storage provide all the organization you need.

At 5'2" and 90 lbs with a slender torso, I found this backpack adjusts perfectly and takes the pressure off the shoulders. The greatest benefit (other than the small-person sizing) is the AirScape technology that keeps your back absolutely dry with a stiff lattice that separates the bulk of the pack from your body even as it is secured to your back. The zipper is deep, and the main compartment big enough for a jacket, snacks, and poles, with a very generous inner mesh compartment that fits sunscreen, sanitizer, power bars, keys, phone, and small wallet. The scratch-free second outer pocket is surprisingly deep—I use it to keep my sunglasses and earphones but there's room for more. One of the belt pockets is slightly larger than the other; the bigger one will fit a small phone but will NOT fit the ubiquitous giant phone everyone seems to carry around these days, including me (see photos). Hydration bladder is external to avoid internal spills and can be clipped at the top to keep it from sinking down. Poles are stowed easily while hiking without assistance, with one loop at the bottom of the pack and the top (adjustable) loop secured to the harness. The only downside for me is the belt pockets sit at the waist rather than the hip—but this is a small sacrifice considering the light weight and snug fit of the pack. Just remember to reach for your phone or snacks with the opposite hand, or figure out a way to avoid twisting the arm on the same side of the belt pocket to avoid damage to that shoulder. My 13" MacBook Pro fits in the main compartment as well, so I'm planning on taking it as a carry-on for hiking trips. This pack is perfect for day hikes and a must-have for small hikers!Additional note: the harness is attached to the pack behind the hydration pocket and undoing the Velcro will reveal a zipper without a handle. I thought the pack was defective at first, but this area is only used by the manufacturer to get to the AirScape if it's in need of repair. This is a great backpack. It had everything and more that I was looking for. It's lightweight, comfortable and has lots of extra little pockets. I love the front center pocket to have easy access to a rain jacket or an extra water bottle or two (I end up carrying the kids' water bottles as well, so it's great to have them all on the outside, without having to get into the main compartment). Some of the loops on the shoulder straps I am not sure what to use them for. And also the little pocket on the shoulder strap. Maybe for some gum? But it's open to the top, so things could fall out.Overall it's a personal preference, for me this pack only loses out in comparison to one of the same size (20l) made specifically for women as well by the German manufacturer d, in particular:Cons:- lacks an integrated rain cover (d has one)- costs almost twice as much as the d (although the recommended manufacturer's price is $120 for both, I found the d $50 cheaper here on amazon)- lack of fun & bright colors (d comes in fun turquoise shades)- only minimal reflective stripes on the side water bottle holders (present on the d, center bottom, although I wish it had more/ larger ones)pros in addition to the ones mentioned on top that are lacking on the d:- very lightweight (less weight than the d)- additional small internal zippered pocket- helmet attachment (lid lock)- adjustable frame- compression straps for the side water bottle holdersThe d has a little more padding on the back and its construction allows for more air circulation but that also means it's heavier. Both seem to be made of very quality material, maybe the d's fabric and construction are even more solid.Overall it comes down to personal preference. I prefer the d's color and price and don't need the additional features this osprey offers.I love the look of Osprey packs! They have the best colors and are just a good looking design. My magenta pack matches my hair so I was excited to get it. I was wanting a smallish pack(15-25L) for day hiking and on paper this fit the bill perfectly.-20L capacity(I measured for S/M)-Ventilated back panel-Adjustable torso length. Shoulder harness has heavy duty Velcro that you can move-Mesh pocket on strap perfect for head lamp or small hand sanitizer-Large, stretchy external mesh pocket for rain jacket and poop kit-Internal mesh pocket with hook for keys-Hipbelt with padding and pockets-Hydration bladder compatible-Hydration hose loops on both straps-Load lifter straps-Great as a carry-on. Fit easily under seats and I put tiny TSA padlocks on the zipper pulls and secure them while walking thru crowds, getting on/off planeThere are a number of things that didn't seem as great once I tested it more thorougly.-Hipbelt pockets are very small. I can fit 2 granola bars or a bottle of hand sanitizer in each and that's it-No where to store my phone that is easily accessible and secure-If I fill my 3L H2O bladder it's a tight squeeze getting it into the hydration sleeve and takes up quite a bit of the internal capacity-Pack doesn't stand up on its own. Just flops over unless full and completely zipped upI have used this pack quite a bit since I bought it and just can't seem to adjust it so that I don't feel it and end up with a bit of soreness between my shoulders if I walk around with it on more than a few hours. The hip belt I have yet to find a perfect adjustment for. It helps that I can tuck it away behind me if my pack is light and then use the belt when I have the full hydration bladder and lots of gear. I have never tried carrying more than 12-13 pounds. I haven't had need of the lidlock yet but when I hike in rocky, mountain areas and need to wear a helmet, I'll be glad that it has the feature. I'm sure for some this is perfect but for me it's not terrible, but not great. I use it as my daily carry pack in the car and around town and it works well.I got the bag to go on holiday, so both for travel on plane/bus and doing day hikes. It's spacious enough for day hikes in normal climate (but then again I usually tend to pack the kitchen sink as well). The water bottle holders on sides are big enough to store standard slim line water bottles (Evian 750ml fit in there too), however it's not easy to retrieve and put them back with the bag on, unless your arms fold backwards in an inhuman way.The bag has 2 small zipped pockets which I was pleasantly surprised by, as well as a roomy mesh front pocket. The airstream system is good at making sure your back stays cool enough in hot climate and difficult terrain. It sat very comfortably on my back, but I did go in a shop to have a test drive before purchasing on-line, plus the colour choices are so much better on-line.All in all would recommend to a friend 100%Bought this as my other backpack is very large and I needed something a bit smaller. This backpack is an ideal size for a day out in the hills. I do tend to take plenty of kit with me, waterproofs, spare hat, scarf, gloves and socks, first aid kit, support bandages, small microfibre towel, spare batteries, spare bootlaces, whistle as well as maps, GPS and phone. This backpack is just big enough to squeeze in all my kit and there's still enough room for water and food.It is so very comfortable to wear and fits me snugly. (I am only 7.5 stone). The quality looks good, but only time will tell. I am very happy with this backpack,I bought a couple of Osprey packs last year. They are great quality with a cracking guarantee. This pack is no different. I took it on a day hike yesterday when it arrived. It was light and fits everything I need in it. The female design makes it much more comfier for my shoulders. Definitely recommendLightweight, the right size for ladies, comfortable to carry. Simple, with lot of features - helmet holder, fast front walking poles holder, water bag accessible from outside, flexible front pocket for quick storing, flexible side pockets for water bottle. No rain cover to keep the weight as low as possible. Was thinking about Osprey Syncro, but it is not in ladies sizing, so prefered Tempest.Had a smaller version of this bag, it was great in everthing it was made for but this one had a slight difference, the waist strap has some passing that is very stiff and ends up chaffing lower back just above pelvic bone. I'm hoping this would ease with time. Other than that the bag does all it says in the description.
